The Stockings Were Hung…

cross stitched christmas stocking b

Busy busy busy!  But I thought you might like to see this stocking that I made.  Yes, homemade stockings take time.  But they are so worth it!  I really love this stocking.  It took me soooo many hours to cross stitch this thing, but totally worth it!

I’m curious what everyone’s traditions are when it comes to stockings.  Homemade or store bought?  Big or little?  Do you put an orange in the toe?  What else do you fill it, when do you open them?

Look at the fun details on this thing!

And the ca-ute creatures are to die for!

What kinds of stockings do you have?  We actually have 3 sets…don’t ask.

One my Mom fills for all of her kids and grandkids for Christmas Eve.  Last year I took those cheap red stockings and embroidered all of our names on them.  Then, we have the handmade ones.

I love your stocking! I hope whoever it is for appreciates all the time that went into making it. I wish I had time to cross-stitch again. You've inspired me to set aside some time next year.

I have had the same stocking for as I can remember. It's a red furry stocking with a teddy bear head wearing a santa hat (with holly) attached at the top and his little paws hanging over the front of the stocking. I used to get everything from candy, small knick knacks to full on movies stuffed in there. These days it doesn't always get used fully. I actually made a point of hanging it on the bedroom door to remind my fiance that he can add small items in there. lol. I have been thinking about making stocking now though. I saw some gorgeous ones on this huge display in Victoria a few years ago and fell in love with a jester stocking. Once I acquire a sewing machine I might start playing with making some homemade ones but my teddy bear stocking just has to stick around no matter what. I did knit up some mini stockings and stuffed (as best I could) with chocolate for my step-siblings our first christmas together.

I used to cross stitch all the time! No time anymore either! ;)

There are so many other types of stockings I would love to make. I've had Christmas material set aside for years, to make up a new set. Why would I need more than one set? I don't have a clue! I guess I love all stockings that I want one of each!

It is sad that our own stockings end up being neglected as adults! ;)

Your stocking is beautiful. That must have taken so much time.

My two older girls have store-bought cross-stitch stockings, though one has gone missing. I made my youngest daughter's stocking last year. Picture here:

We usually fill the stockings with a few little gifts (new toothbrushes, etc.). Though, one of my girls may get coal this year ;-)

Our stockings were a hodge podge of ones given, store bought and homemade... My parents always filled the toes with mixed unshelled nuts followed by an orange then an apple on top of that was a small amount of candy and on top of that were small toys and doodads... When I got older I lived with my sister and brother-in-law and a part of his family's stocking tradition (besides individually wrapping every item) was a teeny whitmans sampler box of chocolates and a toothbrush- also you had to guess what each item was before opening it... Lots of fun!

I remember one year my Dad got the neatest coal. It came in the cutest tiny coal cart. It was a hard licorice candy. You used a mini shovel to break off small pieces to eat. I've searched for something similar ever since, to no avail! ;)

The stockings we open from my Mother on Christmas Ever are all separately wrapped too! Everyone has the same stuff so you try to race through yours instead of taking a long time and figuring out what everything is because of what other people have already unwrapped! I love that tradition!

Thanks for sharing!

Well, it's not all bad. I miss having my stocking filled with little treats and candies and chocolates and things, but I still get pretty spoiled. The kitchen aid stand mixer I got for Christmas last year definitely would not have fit in my stocking. ;)

Growing up I always had inexpensive store-bought stockings. This year, I want to make some out of thrifted sweaters. Not sure if that will actually happen or not! I've got the sweaters, but I'm a little short on time. ;)

Just this year I purchased a new 'set' of stockings for all of my family (an 18 mo. old and a 7 week old). The stockings are velvet-ey with a monogrammed letter of the first letter in each of our names. I love them!! St. Nick usually visits us on the night of December 5th.... we have a fun morning on December 6th.

I just made new stockings for the whole family since my youngest daughter was born. Here is the story behind our stockings. http://piecesofmymind-marianne.blogspot.com/2010/12/family-stockings.html
I love your new stocking and I appreciate all the work that went into making it as I used to do needle work myself before I had kids.
Thank you for sharing at Holly Bloggy.

Can you tell me where you found the kit/ pattern for that stocking? I would love to make one like it. I have 7 kids and am expecting a grandbaby and want to make a stocking for him next! (I have made 9 cross stitch stockings so far ! )
