Day 4 Valentine Count Down-Love Letter Felt envelope tutorial

Isn't it cute?

I thought these envelopes would be cute for Valentine's day. You could make them any size or shape you want really. You could embelish it as much or as little as you want. You could also personalize it or write different Valentines-y things on it...like Love Letters, or To My Love, or Be Mine or specify who it is to.

I started with a regular old piece of white felt, my pinking shears and two hearts I cut out of red felt.

Then I cut with my pinking shears along both long sides and one short side. Would you say you *pinked* along the sides? I think I'm going to call it that. I like pink, so why not?

Sew two lines where you are going to fold. I kind of folded it first to see where I wanted the creases to be, then I pinned it and sewed it. (Something to think about, I folded it with the bottom section leaving a little gap between where the bottom meets the top flap so there was room for the top fold...if that makes any sense...this will be important when you are sewing the crease for the flap. Read ahead and let me know if you understand what I'm talking about.)

Fold it in half length wise.

Pink a diagonal line. This is going to make the flap on the back of the envelope. The widest part of it should be where it is folded. The most narrow is where the two ends are.

Now embelish the middle section. I put one of the hearts on and sewed squiggly lines like a cancelled postage stamp. You could also sew or hand stitch something like Be Mine on it like you are addressing it, or Love Letters. I left mine blank.

Sew the other heart on the point of the flap part. You could put velcro on at this time. But I'm not doing that for this project. If I wanted it to be used for holding something in, maybe I would.

This is a little tricky to explain. You are going to make the back part now. It is the bottom third section of your felt. You want to make a V here to make it look like a folded envelope when you are done. I eyeballed mine and pinned it. Sorry no picture of that.

Fold it leaving the flap section flat (unfolded). Notice how the fold/crease/top seam and the top of the bottom have a few centimeters between them? This is what I'm trying to explain but can't figure out how to;) Sew along both the sides.

Fold the top to make the flap. This is the part I mentioned earlier. I left a little space from where the bottom comes up and where the crease is. Sew along the top crease making sure you don't sew the bottom section in. You want an envelope that you can actually put things in.

Pink along the edge to make it cute. You could leave it, but I liked it better pinked all the way around.
